How to watch the 2020 PGA Championship: Sky Sports Golf and Sky Sports Main Event.

The first major of the year and arguably the most anticipated PGA Championship ever tees off on Thursday afternoon!

Main contenders

Justin Thomas

He’s currently the world number one and the 2017 champion. Thomas has been very consistent since the restart culminating in a win at the WGC-St Jude Invitational in Memphis which has made him the favourite for this year’s tournament.

Justin Thomas is at 10/1 to win the 2020 PGA Championship.

Bryson DeChambeau

A lot has been made of DeChambeau’s new fitness regime which has seen him top the driving distance charts. It has undoubtedly been working as he also won the Rocket Mortgage Classic in July and he has made a few top 10 finishes, but he did fail to make the cut at the Memorial tournament a few weeks back.

Bryson DeChambeau is at 14/1 to win the PGA Championship.

Webb Simpson

The current world number four is coming into this major with some form after winning the RBC Heritage tournament back in June. He won the US Open back in 2012 and has disappointed massively in majors since then with 5th place at the 2019 Masters being his best major performance since his first win. Simpson is known for his putting ability and remains one of the best on tour.

Webb Simpson is currently at 22/1 to win.

Jon Rahm

Rahm was briefly the world number one after his recent victory at the Memorial tournament — making him one of the favourites for the first major of the year. He has yet to win a major and will want to avoid joining Lee Westwood and Luke Donald as the only world number ones not to win one sooner rather than later.

Jon Rahm is at 13/1 to win the PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy has good memories of this course as he won the WGC Match Play Championship here in 2015. Combined with his number three ranking; he’s one of the favourites to win the PGA Championship. However, his form has been nothing special as of late, and he hasn’t won a major since 2014 which was also the PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy is at 12/1 to add another PGA Championship to his collection

Brooks Koepka

Koepka is the two-time defending champion at this event — winning in 2018 and 2019. Obviously, he is one of the favourites for the tournament and along with McIlroy has the necessary experience of winning a major unlike some of the other candidates.

Brooks Koepka is at 10/1 to win his 3rd PGA Championship.

Outsiders

Jordan Spieth

The PGA Championship is the only major that Spieth hasn’t claimed with his runner-up spot in 2015 being his closest year. His form has suffered drastically since, and he finds himself at 59 in the rankings.

Spieth is at 40/1 to finally win the PGA Championship

Tiger Woods

The 15-time major winner has been plagued with injuries since his 2019 Masters win and it’d be a tall order for him to win here. He has not played any warm-up event since the golf calendar resumed.

Tiger Woods is at 28/1 to win his 16th major.

Other players to watch

Xander Schauffele.

Dustin Johnson.

Patrick Cantlay.

Tommy Fleetwood.

Tyrell Hatton.

Course review

As mentioned above, McIlroy has won on this course before and according to organisers; they’ve placed bunkers in areas to avoid giving the big-hitters an unfair advantage. We can only wait until tee time to truly gauge the difficulty of the course. However, it’s unlikely to provide such a stern test compared to the courses played at the US Open.

The great thing about golf is that it’s very common for an unlikely candidate to hit red-hot form for four days and to win a major ahead of the big names and don’t be too surprised if this happens again!
